Essay #1 - due 10/6

You will need to type, print, and submit your essays in class on 10/6. You may choose one of the following options:

Option #1. Art - Write a descriptive essay about your favorite painting. Provide some background details about the painting, then describe (what you see), interpret (what you think it means), and evaluate (what you like and/or dislike) it.

Option #2. Literature - Think of two fictional characters from books you have read. Write a comparative essay explaining some of the similarities and differences between these two characters.

Option #3. Education - Imagine Korean universities decided to stop using the Suneung exam for university admissions. Write a cause-effect essay discussing the possible effects of this decision.

Option #4. Global Issues - There is currently a refugee crisis in Europe as millions of Syrians are forced to leave their homes due to the war. Germany is welcoming many of these asylum seekers, but more countries need to help. Write an opinion essay explaining whether or not you think the Korean government should welcome more Syrians into the country.

  2. Good question, Eunsung! Normally you shouldn't include pictures on formal essays; however, it might be helpful to include a picture of the painting you are describing if you have selected that option. You can put the picture either before the introduction or after the conclusion.

  3. professor! I wonder what conclusion is in option 1? It is providing some background details about the painting, and describing(what I see), interpreting (what I think it means), and evaluating (what I like) it.

  4. Regardless of the type of essay you write, the conclusion should review or summarize the key points from the body. You can do this by paraphrasing or restating the thesis statement. The conclusion should also offer some sort of final thought, such as a prediction or recommendation. In the case of the essay about a work of art, you should provide a very basic review of your description, interpretation, and analysis. Then you should make a final thought about the painting, such as its broader social significance, a prediction about the future of its popularity, or a recommendation of how to enjoy viewing it.
